Pantaloon Retail in India has started the implementation of RFID technology starting from its warehouse and eventually branch offices and retail outlets.
The detail description of the article is quite intriguing because many still consider RFID item-level tagging in retail as an unnecessary luxury, especially when the article claims that the time saved for item scanning is 80% in inward warehouse processing and 12% in outward compared to barcode scanning, plus additional 90% improvement of real-time visibility of items during all stages of supply chain.

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) and NCR Corporation on Thursday announced that the oil major had selected NCR for the automation of 165 of its premier Club HP outlets across India.
The project involves end-to-end solution deployment, including NCR RealPOS point-of-sale (POS) terminals as well as software implementation.
The POS and back-office system will be integrated with a radio frequency identification (RFID)-based tagging system.

Indian companies may bleed to make their foreign associates richer. Suppliers to retail majors such as Wal-Mart, Metro, Target and Tesco fear a hit on their bottomline as their foreign partners have issued directives to their suppliers to replace bar codes with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.
The retail bigwigs' diktat is giving sleepless nights to domestic companies. Indian suppliers' worst fear is that the cost of RFID labels will squeeze their margins. “The cost of one RFID tag results in a loss of about 30 US cents.
